Removable liners are only the starting point
Many running shoes accept inserts when the liner is removable and internal volume remains adequate. Before buying, confirm that the exact model has a removable footbed. A product photograph rarely shows whether it is stitched, firmly bonded, or designed to lift out.
Bring your actual orthotic to the fitting. Its heel cup, thickness, and forefoot shape matter more than a generic claim that a shoe is “orthotic friendly.” A very shallow running shoe may become unsuitable even after its original liner is removed.
Seat the insert before putting your foot in
Check that the device rests fully inside without rocking, curling at the front, or leaving its heel perched above the shoe’s heel seat. Use the supplier’s instructions for any permitted trimming. Do not alter a prescribed shell merely to make it enter a particular trainer.
Once wearing the shoe, look for new pressure from the tongue or side panels. Notice whether your heel now sits too high against the collar. Tightening the laces harder does not necessarily solve lost depth; a different upper shape or a deeper model may be needed.
Compare the combination during ordinary movement
Walk before considering a running trial. Evaluate the complete setup with running socks, checking that the foot does not move around the insert during turns. If you normally use a stability shoe, do not assume it must be discarded or automatically retained; discuss the combined setup if the orthotic was prescribed.
A successful fitting does not settle when you should resume running after heel pain. Keep that decision within your rehabilitation plan. When replacing the trainer later, bring the orthotic again: a new edition bearing the same model name can still fit differently inside.
