Identify the type of device first
A full-length orthotic commonly replaces a removable factory liner, but follow the insert maker or clinician’s instructions. A heel cup, a heel lift, and a three-quarter-length device may have different fitting requirements. Do not apply instructions for one product to every accessory sold as an insole.
Look for the directions supplied with the device, including whether it is intended to sit above or instead of the original footbed. If the instructions are unclear, ask the provider before assembling multiple layers. The arrangement affects how much room remains for your foot.
Remove a liner without damaging the shoe
Check whether the factory footbed lifts out easily. If it resists, avoid pulling forcefully at a lining that may be bonded or integral to the shoe. Contact the manufacturer or choose a model with a clearly removable footbed rather than damaging a pair during a returnable trial.
Keep the original liners together and label them for that pair. They may be useful for restoring the shoe, comparing size, or discussing the fitting with an orthotist. Do not cut a custom device to copy their outline unless its supplier specifically directs that adjustment.
Recheck the fit after the swap
Place the replacement flat and make sure it does not buckle at the front. With your foot inside, check tongue pressure, toe height, and the position of your heel relative to the collar. Even a replacement that matches the liner’s outline may be substantially thicker.
If the result feels cramped, adding shoe length is not the only solution. A deeper upper or different shoe shape may accommodate the device more securely. Conversely, if removing the liner leaves an unsuitable gap, ask about the correct fitting rather than filling it with an improvised stack of pads.
