Seek urgent help after a concerning injury
Seek urgent assessment for severe heel pain after an injury, a foot that looks deformed, a snap or pop at the time of injury, or an inability to walk. The NHS also lists inability to use stairs or stand on tiptoes, calf or ankle swelling and bruising, and feeling faint or sick from pain as reasons to contact its urgent advice service.
Use the appropriate urgent medical service where you live; in the UK, NHS 111 can direct you. Do not try to confirm a suspected injury by repeatedly testing painful walking or ordering a more supportive shoe.
Arrange an appointment for persistent or changing pain
The NHS advises medical review when heel pain limits ordinary activities, keeps returning, worsens, or has not improved after two weeks of home care. Tingling, reduced sensation, or heel pain in someone with diabetes also warrants advice. These are reasons to seek assessment, not a checklist that must be completed before asking for help.
Heel pain has several possible causes. The location and timing can be informative, but neither a product quiz nor an online article can establish your diagnosis.
Prepare useful information for the appointment
Write down when the pain began, its exact location, any injury, and whether it follows rest or particular activities. Include recent changes in work, exercise, footwear, and inserts. Bring the shoes or devices you use most if the service asks you to do so.
Ask what diagnosis is being considered, which activities to modify, and what changes should prompt further contact. Make sure you understand the review plan before buying another pair. The practical aim of the appointment is to clarify the problem and next steps, rather than obtain a shopping list without an assessment.
